Flavia Masini – Personal Trainer

Flavia Masini - PerformancePro

Meet Flavia Masini, PerformancePro Trainer, Soft Tissue Therapist and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach. Flavia specialises in training people grappling with chronic pain, by blending strength training protocols with manual therapy techniques.

Flavia’s goal is not only to help her clients to overcome pain, but to prioritise the restoration of their capacity to actively participate in life’s activities, which were once hindered by pain.

Ever since Flavia began coaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, she has also been studying hard to help BJJ players get ready for competitions. Her focus is not only on improving their overall strength, but also their conditioning for the matches.

Flavia’s life before PerformancePro

Originally from Rome, Italy, Flavia two passions are drawing and combat sports, though she only started the latter in her early twenties.

‘Art has been my passion since childhood, and I pursued it by studying Arts at University, earning degrees in artistic Painting and Cultural Heritage Management. Moving to London in 2011, I aimed to work in Museums and develop my artistic abilities, not knowing that my interest in combat sports would change my career path.

‘I started kickboxing at university, then later got into MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu here in London, dedicating myself to training and competing. Injuries were part of this journey, and I learned how debilitating physical pain can be. I decided to dive deeper into strength training and Manual Therapy to better understand pain, how to alleviate it and how to get stronger.’

Flavia and PerformancePro

After managing her own business for several years within a commercial gym, Flavia felt a strong urge to seek out a new environment. She really wanted to join a team and collaborate with top-tier coaches.

‘As a coach, continuous growth and learning are imperative, and being immersed among like-minded individuals is pivotal not only for personal improvement but also for making a more profound impact on those we aim to assist.

‘Following an extensive search and reaching out to numerous avenues, I discovered PerformancePro. It immediately resonated as the ideal place I had been looking for. Discovering a space where professionalism, high standards, and a grounded approach coexist is a rarity, and I’m thrilled to have found such a place.’

And away from the gym?

Not surprisingly, Flavia enjoys immersing herself in her two great passions when she has some spare time,

‘I really enjoy researching the technical side of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, as I’m always aiming to improve my skills and coaching methods. Even though I’m passionate about martial arts, I still cherish my love for drawing. Whenever possible, I return to my pencil and paper, sketching subjects that inspire me.

‘I also love reading books and listening to podcasts, especially those about topics that captivate my interest. Lately, I’ve been absorbed in learning about investing. When I get the opportunity, I like to spend time outdoors, cycling in parks and soaking up the sun.’

Your own fitness

Flavia practises Brazilian Jiujitsu 3 to 4 times a week and does strength training twice a week.

‘My main focuses are to get stronger and more powerful to better perform in Brazilian Jiujitsu and to build my body resilience (given how taxing and demanding the sport is). My goal is longevity, hence having a good balance between smart training and recovery is paramount.’

What are your top 3 fitness Do’s and Don’ts?

DO’S:

  1. Take the first step, no matter how small it is.
  2. Ask for guidance when you are stuck.
  3. SLEEP! That’s the best way to recover.

DON’TS:

  1. Doing more doesn’t lead to better results; precision in effort does.
  2. Don’t ignore pain: it’s the body telling you that something needs to change.
  3. Don’t underestimate the role of good nutrition and proper sleep.
