In reality, however, maintaining your fitness levels at this time of year is a priority. There are higher stress levels all around us, plus the shopping, travel and workload, then the inactivity-induced effects like stiffness, poor posture, and weight gain. Exercise is THE best way to combat these factors and safeguard your health and festive fitness.

Combat Stress

Exercise is an incredibly effective stress-reliever, and often is the first thing to get cut when the going gets tough. An article by the Mayo Clinic outlines just how and why exercise can reduce stress levels:

  • Every bout of exercise stimulates your brain to release a cascade of endorphins (your body’s natural feel-good neurotransmitters). This is most commonly referred to as a runner’s high, but the truth is that any kind of activity will have this endorphin-releasing effect.
  • While exercise itself does imitate the effects of stress on your body, it actually trains your body to deal with these effects and provide more lasting relief from stressful situations.
  • Exercise can improve your mood through increased self-confidence, and a reduction in symptoms of mild depression and anxiety. Exercise has also been shown to improve sleep, which can be a major factor in high stress levels.

Stay Active

Inactivity is the cause of a whole host of problems, including back pain, joint stiffness, and weight gain. We’re not suggesting you don’t take a break over the festive period, but we recommend that staying active is the single best way to counteract any of those effects. Even something simple like taking a walk every day can help, but something more targeted is likely to work better.
